ThruPut Manager® 6 Product Structure
Printer Friendly Version

The ThruPut Manager 6 consists of several components packaged together. The following information outlines the product packaging structure and briefly describes each component and how it contributes to the overall vision of the product.

One Product, Two Editions, Eight Components

The eight components that make up ThruPut Manager are offered in two editions.
The Automation Edition is a package which provides the total batch automation solution as described in the ThruPut Manager 6 Product Overview. It "runs your batch on auto-pilot", guided by your policies which describe the environment (your installation and configuration) and the destination (your service targets). The Automation Edition package includes all the Standard Edition components, and automatically invokes their services as needed. With the Standard Edition you "map out the route" using ThruPut Manager's rule language and other controls. The individual components are available for datacenters requiring solutions to specific batch issues, such as tape drive management or software license compliance. TM/Service Level ManagerTM

TM/Service Level Manager provides an "auto-pilot" solution for managing your batch service objectives. It

  • Maps out the best strategy to reach your batch "destination", which you specify as simple wall-clock service targets.
  • Independently manages queue time and execution time with algorithms suited for each.
  • Manages each job individually to ensure every job best meets its service target.
  • Uses TM-Managed Initiators to provide automated capability which outperforms JES2 and WLM.
  • Provides balanced or asymmetric workload distribution across LPARs using WLM data and your definitions.
  • Works with your policies - targets, thresholds and batch importance - to deliver optimal batch throughput and service.
  • Provide feedback, by means of graphs and charts, in the same terminology as your policies.

TM/Service Level Manager is a radical leap in datacenter automation technology. Your SLAs are met and you get the most out of your system.

TM/Production Control ServicesTM

TM/Production Control Services provides automated production workload management that makes the most of the available batch window. It

  • Interfaces with CA-7® to capture your scheduling priorities, dependencies and deadlines.
  • Recalculates the production critical path as workload progresses.
  • Proactively controls the production queue and initiators to prioritize job execution.
  • Controls tape drive access and dataset contention in accordance with CA-7 priorities.
  • Eliminates interference from non-production workload through dataset fencing and enforcing of job classing standards.
  • Keeps Production Control staff informed with consolidated JES2 and CA-7 displays and enhanced alerts.

TM/Production Control Services works in conjunction with ThruPut Manager and CA-7 to automate your production workload and control the resources. Your production schedule is met and you get the most out of CA-7.

Standard Edition Components

ThruPut Manager® Base

The base ThruPut Manager product provides three major functions that are of general applicability to all JES2 installations.

Job Classing Services
Execution classes and priorities are assigned automatically, based on job characteristics and resource requirements - all according to your installation's rules. Support for the batch facilities of Workload Manager include the assignment of WLM service classes and scheduling environments.

SYSOUT Services
All SYSOUT and OUTPUT related JCL parameters can be examined and modified using JAL rules. SYSOUT standards management is simplified and automated.

Job Setup Services
External resources such as DFSMShsm datasets and virtual volumes are automatically recalled at queue-time rather than execution-time. Unlike execution-time serial recalls, Job Setup Services makes the recalls in parallel. Job Setup Services also issues "pull lists" for manual mounts at queue-time rather than waiting to do them at execution-time. Whether the recall is automatic or manual, the job can be held for a specified period of time or until the recall is complete, whichever comes first. Initiator waits on external resources are eliminated. Initiators are freed up for other work and system throughput is improved.

TM/Drive Booking ServicesTM

TM/Drive Booking Services delivers automated tape drive management to the datacenter. Drive utilization and batch throughput are maximized. It

  • Automatically determines the resource needs of each job when submitted.
  • Meticulously tracks the availability of drives.
  • Matches jobs and drives, using proprietary algorithms, so that all jobs execute optimally.
  • Removes costly run-time delays so that jobs execute more quickly.
  • Dedicates drives to production and critical workloads.
  • Bases its decisions on your defined policies and priorities.

TM/Drive Booking Services uses a number of strategies to ensure drive usage is optimized for the whole workload and no one job is penalized unduly. With TM/DBS, you should never see allocation recovery incidents again.

TM/Dataset Contention ServicesTM

This component solves the operational and throughput problems which result when two or more jobs need the same dataset, and at least one of the jobs requires the dataset exclusively.

Jobs with dataset contention conflicts are automatically identified when they are selected for execution. They are put back in the queue with a special DCS hold, and are automatically released when the dataset becomes available. Dataset conflicts are resolved under control of your programmable rules, with no operator intervention.

TM/Job Binding ServicesTM

TM/Job Binding Services solves batch resource management issues through its Job Binding and Job Limiting facilities.

Job Binding
The execution of jobs that require "binding" to a database, software license or other resource is automatically controlled. Workload routing among multiple processors is fully automated under control of installation rules.

An extension of the binding facility allows software license management under TSO, using the same mechanisms as under batch. A user will be prevented from accessing the software from an unlicensed LPAR and informed where the software is available.

Job Limiting
Initiator resources can be protected from "hogging" or over-utilization by automatically limiting the number of jobs with similar characteristics or resource requirements running concurrently.

TM/Robotic Setup ServicesTM

This component extends the facilities of the base Job Setup Services function. It provides specialized services which improve the throughput and simplify the management of jobs requiring robotics managed cartridges.

It can be used to establish robotics standards, ensure residency requirements, facilitate unattended operations, handle robotics "unit down" incidents, and ultimately improve robotics throughput and utilization.

TM/User Control ServicesTM

TM/User Control Services provides job submitters with job management capability far more powerful than the limited facilities of JES2. Three related facilities are provided.

Dependent Job Control
DJC allows users to create groups of related jobs and control the interdependencies among them.

Job Timing Services
JTS gives users control over the eligibility of a job for selection by JES2, based on date and time conditions.

User Hold Services
UHS allows users to hold jobs, attach annotating comments, and release them.
Users can specify appropriate controls through JCL statements and an ISPF dialog.

Special Component

TM/JES3 Compatibility ServicesTM

TM/JES3 Compatibility Services makes it possible to run JES3 batch jobstreams under JES2 without any JCL changes. It eliminates the need for an extensive JCL conversion by automatically invoking equivalent JES2 facilities and providing unique JES3 functions for JES2 systems. TM/JES3 Compatibility Services facilities include a 'dependent job control' capability fully compatible with the JES3 //*NET facility.
