ThruPut Manager Automation Edition - General Availability

MVS Solutions Inc. is pleased to announce the "General Availability" of ThruPut Manager Automation Edition. The new core component, TM/Service Level Manager, brings unprecedented automation to z/OS JES2 batch management and makes service-oriented management of batch processing a reality.

This has been the largest single development effort to date by MVS Solutions and we are pleased with the enthusiastic response during the Early Availability Program.  We would like to acknowledge the EAP Participants who provided the chance to prove the product in a 'real environment'.  Because of their assistance, we can assure you of its stability, performance and usability.

Support for z/OS 1.9 with ThruPut Manager Version 6 Release 1.2

This General Maintenance level provides full Support for z/OS 1.9 at maintenance PTF Level TMT6118. This level of ThruPut Manager will no longer co-exist with ThruPut Manager Version 5 and no longer support the Pre V6 Format of the Control File. In addition, it no longer supports JTSOLD.

Early Availability of TM/Service Level Manager

We are delighted to offer TM/Service Level Manager, the core component of the Automation Edition. It has been installed and used in early user sites and is now shipping to other customers ready to go to the next step of batch service level management. General Availability is planned for second quarter, 2007."

  • TM/Production Control Services Concepts and Facilities (revised) - This manual provides an overview of the additional Automation Edition features for managing the scheduled production workload.
  • Automation Edition: Technical Background - A Personal Perspective (new) - This document gives insight into the observations and decisions that informed the overall architecture of the Automation Edition. It includes an in-depth discussion and critique of WLM services for batch and specifically, WLM-managed initiators. It is told in the very personal and engaging style of Jose Danobeitia, Chief Technology Architect of ThruPut Manager and President of MVS Solutions.
  • Automation Edition Graphs and Charts Sampler (new) - This short manual walks through examples that demonstrate the reporting facilities of TM/Service Level Manager. This will be of interest to both people embarking on their TM/SLM implementation, as well as those seeking a better understanding of the power of the Automation Edition.
  • TM/Service Level Manager Supplement (new) - This technical manual provides all the information you need to implement TM/SLM, including advanced planning considerations.

ThruPut Manager Version 6 Release 1.2

The General Availability of ThruPut Manager Version 6 Release 1.2 is now available. This general maintenance upgrade, PTF TMT6112 also:

  • provides the platform (minimum level) for the ThruPut Manager Version 6 Automation Edition, including TM/Service Level Manager.
  • provides full support for z/OS 1.8
  • provides full support for IBM's TCPIP over NJE in z/OS 1.7 and above

Additionally, support for TM V5.2 (all releases) and compatibility code for the Pre V6 Format of the Control File under V6 is being withdrawn. Please refer to the Product Availability page accessible from the Bulletin Board of the Customer Center Lobby for more details.

ThruPut Manager 6 with TM/Drive Booking Services - Early Availability

Version 6 development for the base product and current components of ThruPut Manager and the new TM/Drive Booking Services component is now complete. Our Early Availability program is underway with General Availability targeted for the fall.

Support for z/OS 1.4 with ThruPut Manager Version 5 Release 2.2

We are pleased to announce ThruPut Manager® Version 5 Release 2.2 is now available. With this release, ThruPut Manager continues its tradition of satisfying many customer requirements and maintains its position as the only total solution to automated batch workload management for OS/390 and z/OS platforms. Highlights of V5 R2.2 include:

  • Support for z/OS 1.4 and above.
  • Numerous enhancements to ThruPut Manager’s language facilities, including support for StorageTek 9840’s.
  • The elimination of tape allocation overhead for IEFBR14-type steps.
  • A new “Binding Environments” facility which provides a superset of Workload Manager’s Resource Affinity Scheduling.
  • The automatic decrementing of Limiting Agents for tape units, as each step terminates.
  • The ability to add installation data to UDF displays associated with JBS and JLS agents.
  • And much more.

Announcing... TM/Production Control Services - CA-7's Best Friend

MVS Solutions Inc. is pleased to announce TM/Production Control ServicesTM. TM/PCS is an extension of ThruPut Manager that provides Production Control staff with automated management of their CA-7 production batch schedule in the world of OS/390 and z/OS. TM/PCS interfaces with CA-7 to understand the scheduling priorities, dependencies and deadlines and then manages the job selection process to ensure the best decisions are made to meet the deadlines. It controls tape drive access and dataset contention in accordance with CA-7 priorities and eliminates interference from unscheduled workload.

Announcing... ThruPut Manager Version 5 Release 2.1

We are pleased to announce ThruPut Manager® Version 5 Release 2.1, to be available end of March, 2002. Highlights of this new release include:

  • Numerous enhancements to ThruPut Manager’s rules language facilities
  • Enhancements to ThruPut Manager’s cross-systems communication, using XCF facilities

Support for z/OS 1.2 and above - Six Digit Job Numbers

Support has now been provided for z/OS 1.2 and z/OS 1.3 as part of ThruPut Manager Version 5 Release 2.0 PTF TMT5203.  Note that this support is available with Version 5 Release 2 of ThruPut Manager only. It is not intended to provide this support for Version 4 or Version 5 Release 1.

Enhanced User Control over Submitted Jobs

MVS Solutions Inc. is pleased to announce the availability of TM/User Control Services™. TM/UCS is a new optional component of ThruPut Manager which provides job submitters with job management capability far more powerful than the limited facilities of JES2. Three related facilities are provided. Dependent Job Control allows users to create groups of related jobs and control the interdependencies among them. Job Timing Services gives users control over the eligibility of a job for selection by JES2, based on date and time conditions. User Hold Services allows users to hold jobs, attach annotating comments, and release them. Users can specify appropriate controls through JCL statements and an ISPF dialog.

Software Access Control Now Available

MVS Solutions Inc. is pleased to announce the availability of Software Access Control, a new facility built on ThruPut Manager's Job Binding Services application. Software Access Control uses the Job Binding mechanism to control access to licensed software, both from batch and from TSO.

A product is defined in a table, showing how the product is invoked through JCL and ISPF panels and commands. A batch job that attempts to access the product is automatically routed to the LPAR where the license is available; a TSO session is allowed to access the product only if the session is active on the licensed LPAR. An attempted access from another LPAR is refused and the user is informed where to log on in order to access the product

All Major Virtual Tape Systems Now Supported

With the addition of SAMS:Vtape, ThruPut Manager now supports all of the major Virtual Tape Systems. With Version 5, new JAL Descriptors were provided to determine each job’s usage of VTS. Specifically, you can identify the number of VTS scratch tapes used, the maximum number of VTS units used by any one job step, and the total number of VTS volumes requested by the job. Initially, Version 5 only supported the IBM VTS system. Support is now provided for the StorageTek Virtual Tape Storage System, Sutmyn’s Virtual Tape Server, IBM robots in BTLS mode, the COPYCROSS facility of EMC and now Sterling Software’s SAMS:Vtape product.

HFS Files Now Supported

Hierarchical File System (HFS) is now supported within DAL. PATH, PATHDISP, PATHMODE, PATHOPTS, DSNTYPE, and FILEDATA in JCL are recognized. This further enhances ThruPut Manager's ability to help manage today's complex and often mixed environments.
